Purpose of Unit

The purpose of this unit plan is to create a learning environment incorporating both national and state science standards into a series of lessons focusing on a specific science topic.
The lesson topic will be centered on plate tectonics, on which the following questions will be asked and answered by the students themselves.

  • What is the history of the plate tectonic theory.
  • What is plate tectonics theory?
  • How does plate tectonics theory explain the students' observations of the world they live in?
  • Is it a valid theory?

The lessons will be student centered and include inquiry based instruction. I will use various teaching strategies that will encompass the many learning styles of my adolescent students, and will promote student participation in both an individual and group based manner to aid the adolescent in building the social skills to succeed in school and in life outside of the educational experience.. I will incorporate strategies that will aid in developing sound reading skills in science as well as reinforcing the notion that students should strive to Think and Act Like a Scientist.
